Religion: Church records at the New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church located in Lovettsville, VA show that Joseph Stickels was christened on October 31, 1813.
Comments: It has been assumed that Henry is the brother of Simon and Joseph but this has not yet been proven.

It is also believed that Joseph's wife Hariet Ashby is the sister of Joseph's brother Simon's wife Amelia Ashby

Age 28 - The marriage license indicates Joseph's wife as Harriet Ashby issued by Clark Co., Virginia on June 26, 1841.

Age 38 - 1850 Census lists Joseph Stickle as 38 years and his wife Harriet is 34. Joseph's occupation is listed as a laborer. Their real estate value is listed as $80. Everyone in the home was born in Virginia. Joseph's father George was living with them and his age is 82. The oldest child is listed as a 7 year old male named John (Jn) [previously noted as "Eve" but this may have been a mistake]. The other children Geo (age 5), Jacob (age 5), Ann (age 2) and James (Jas) [Previously indicated as Ed but this maybe an error] (7 mos.) [All their names are spelled "Stickle"]

[Note: Just above Joseph is the Castelow family, father James (58 yrs), Margaret (51 yrs), Margaret (20 yrs), Joseph (11 yrs) and Martin (5 yrs) - [Susan was married 9 years previously but Joseph must have met her by this time]

Age 48 - The 1860 Census Joseph "Stickles" is married to Harriett and there are 9 children living in the home. John Martin (18 yrs), George R. (15 yrs), Jacob (14 yrs), Barbara (10 yrs), James W. (8 yrs), Mary (7 yrs), Joseph A. (5 yrs), Henry J. (3 yrs) and Sarah (1 yr). Joseph is listed as a farmer and is oldest son John M is listed as a laborer. The place of birth for all family members is listed as Virginia. The total value of Joesph's estate is listed as $2,150

Age 58 - The 1870 U.S. Census for Clarke County, Joseph Stickles was living in Chapel Township of Clarke County, Virginia with Millwood as the Post Office. Harriett, his wife is not listed on this census which would indicate to me that she must have died sometime between the 1860 and the 1870 census. Listed on this census were Joseph (age 56), Jacob (24) James M (20) Mary A (18) Joseph (16) Henry (13) Simon J (11) and Sarah E (9). All were born in Virginia. Joseph, Jacob, James and Joseph are shown as "works on farm". Mary is shown as "keeping house".

Age 68 - In the 1880 Census Joseph is living with his second wife Susan . Sophia is listed as his niece. [Note: Susan's Brother James W. Costelow (Joan Hacket's Sealock Database) had three children one of whom was a Sophia Costelow]
