There is some confusion about Mary's name. It could be Mary Alma which is used most frequently in hand me down verbal stories. Mary Alma is used in the Stickel/Hill Family Bible. Mary A. Hill is on her tombstone. Several census reports have Mary A. On the other hand, several census reports have Mary M. Also, on her death certificate, her son William F. Hill, gave her name as Mary Melvina Hill. [from Edie Rider]

Age 19 - There is a curious marriage certificate (PDF file) showing a marriage between John H Wilson and Mary M Stickles. The interesting thing about this license is that John was born in Wisconsin and Mary was born in Clarke County, VA. Both were currently living in Clarke County at the time of the marriage. The license was issued on January 5, 1871 and the marriage occurred on January 10, 1871. We believe William and Mary Alma were married on the same day but no other marriage document have been found for William or Mary so it appears there was some sort of mistake or John Wilson was an alias for William A Hill. It is a mystery.
[Edie Rider states the following... with regards to this mystery]
"The Stickel/Hill family bible as well as all other documents that I can find clearly show that Mary Alma Stickel married William Alonzo Hill on January 10, 1871. Their first child William F. Hill was born on December 6, 1871. This does not give much time for two husbands. I have been totally unsuccessful in finding ANY information on a John H. Wilson and I don't see any way that the names William Alonzo Hill could be confused with John H. Wilson."
Age 28 - The 1880 Census shows a Mary Alma Hill and her husband William living in Eagle Point, Chippewa County, Wisconsin (WI) next door to her brother James W Stickel. It appears that both William and his brother-in-law were both working as loggers.
"Neither William Alonzo Hill nor John H. Wilson shows up on a 1870 in Virginia. For that matter, I haven't been able to find William Alonzo anywhere on a 1870 census."

William's death certificate state that his wife's maiden name was Mary Stickel.
On Mary's death certificate (PDF file), her son William F. Hill, gave her name as Mary Melvina Hill. [From Edith Rider]
