The following obit for John is found in the May 20, 1902 Courier of Clarke County:

John W Locke a highly esteemed citizen of Longmarsh District, died May 20 after a long and painful illness. Mr. Locke was one of the most prosperous farmers in the district and accumulated a nice property by industry and thrift. He was an active member of the church and will be missed by a large circle of friends and relatives. Survivors are four sons and one daughter who are all underage and now both motherless and fatherless, their mother having died some months ago. Mr. Locke's age was 42. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church May 22 with Rev. Stalling officiating. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery.
