Comments: The 1840 Census of Virginia (Western District), Clarke Co, page 9. John Ashby b. 1781 - 1790 wife b. between 1781 – 1790, plus 9 others all b. between 1811 – 1830 (2 males, 7 females, no slaves).

1850 Census of Virginia, Clarke Co, District 12, page 177, stop 126. 68 year old John Ashby, widower, is shown residing with 16 yr old Susan A. Stickel (b. VA). [SPECULATION: Most likely Susan A. Stickel is John's grandchild by his daughter Harriet. It is known that two of John's daughters married Stickel males. Amelia Ashby m. Simon Stickel and Harriet Ashby m. Joseph Stickel. But Simon and Amelia (Ashby) Stickel are residing nearby with their 12 yo daughter named Sarah J. Stickel. END OF SPECULATION]

Note: According to extensive research by Mary Hannegan (McMillan) the "Ashby Book" by Lee Reese contains an error regarding Benjamin Peyton Ashby. Benjamin was not the son of John and Sarah Ashby but the son of a (Dayton) Peyton Ashby and Elsie Corder (Ashby) and at this time Benjamin's relationship to the Ashby family line is still unknown [Feb 2011].
