Comments: Birth may also be 1782 in Frederick Co., Virginia
According to J H Garner death was - AFT 1850 in Narrows Township, Macon Co, Missouri (MI), USA [John's son Jeremiah Ashby's family moved to Missouri - MS]
Much of the information on John's children came from the Ashby Book by Lee Reese.
Age 58 - 1840 US Census - Living in Clarke Co., Virginia, Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14 - (1), Free White Persons - Males - 15 thru 19 (1), Free White Persons - Males - 50 thru 59 -(1) [John], Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 14 - (2), Free White Persons - Females - 15 thru 19 - (2), Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29 - (3), Free White Persons - Females - 50 thru 59 - (1), Free White Persons - Under 20 - (6), Free White Persons - 20 thru 49 - (3) - Total Free White Persons - (11), Total All Persons - Free White, Free Colored, Slaves - (11)
Age 68 - 1850 US Census - Living in District 12, Clarke Co., Virginia, USA, page 177, stop 126. 68 year old John Ashby, widower, is shown residing with 16 yr old Susan A. Stickles (born in 1834). [SPECULATION: It is possible that Susan A. Stickel is John's grandchild by his daughter Amelia. Amelia did not marry until 1836 at the age of 28 when Susan was 2 years old, so Susan is likely the illegitimate daughter Simon Stickles. John and his wife may have raised the girl in their home until the age of 16. It is unknown what happened to Susan after 1850]
Note: According to extensive research by Mary Hannegan (McMillan) the "Ashby Book" by Lee Reese contains an error regarding Benjamin Peyton Ashby. Benjamin was not the son of John and Sarah Ashby but the son of a (Dayton) Peyton Ashby and Elsie Corder (Ashby) and at this time Benjamin's relationship to the Ashby family line is still unknown [Feb 2011].
