Obituary
The Wilson family is sad to announce the passing of Alvin J. Wilson at his home in the early morning hours Sunday. "Al" Wilson, who lived to the age of 71, was a lifelong Pennsylvanian, role model and inspiration to all who knew him.
Al was the only son of the late Chester A. Wilson and Mary T. Wilson, Cressona.
He received his undergraduate degree from Ursinus College and pursued his graduate studies at Shippensburg State University, both in Pennsylvania. Al taught social studies and coached high school football for 11 years before moving on to 17 years of coaching college football, first at Temple University, then at Princeton University in New Jersey and finally at Delaware Valley College, where he was head coach and also director of athletics.
From 1987 to 1992, Al was executive director of TEAM FAD Inc., a nonprofit, nationally-recognized organization committed to educating and inspiring young people to stay positive and stay away from drugs through involvement in sports.
From 1992 to December 2003, Al served as director of athletics and student activities for the Palisades School District. Al touched the lives of thousands of young people and encouraged them to push for their personal best.
Upon retirement, Al happily spent much of his time with his wife, Judy, at their vacation home on Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos. He also loved to attend his grandchildren's various sporting and school events.
Al was an active member of Salem United Church of Christ. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Doylestown, the local Union Horse Company and the Moose Lodge of Doylestown. Most recently, Al was pleased to learn that he had been selected for induction into the Delaware Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame for 2009.
As proud as he was of his students, athletes and fellow coaches, Al was proudest of his family.
Al is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy Castree Wilson; his three adult children, Pam Gazda and her husband, Rich, Doylestown, Jeff Wilson and his wife, Lisa De Leon, Kansas City, Mo., and Jon Wilson and his wife, Mary Ellen, Warrington; his six grandchildren, Chris, Drew, James, Rebecca, Abby, and Norah; and his aunt, Mildred James, Pottsville.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Al's family from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown. A memorial service will he held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem United Church of Christ, 186 E. Court St., Doylestown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Al's name may be made to Ann Silverman Community Health Clinic, 595 W. State St., Doylestown, Pa. 18901. Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, Doylestown, is in charge of arrangements.
