On Friday, September 9, 2005, Gwen lost her fight with pancreatic cancer, and passed away in hospice care at her daughter's home in Bethesda, Md.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years Stephen Underwood; daughters Carol Bragale, Durinda Bernard; and son Aaron Underwood; four grandchildren; her mother; stepfather; sister; and several nieces and nephews.

Gwen was 62 and a native of Alexandria, VA, where she graduated from Hammond High School in 1961. The last several years she devoted much of her time and efforts to shelters for abused women and homeless families in area shelters. Most recently she had led the efforts of Northern Virginia family services in Alexandria to transition families from shelters to independent housing and to home ownership.

A memorial service will be held at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church, 322 N. Alfred St., Alexandria, VA, at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 23.
