On land patented by his father in 1742, located on U.S. Route 17, near Delaplane, VA, Robert Ashby built an early pioneer house of characteristic type, clapboard with dormer windows, Jacobean sloping gables, huge chimneys and full length porch. He named his home Yew Hill. While engaged in surveying his own tract of land lying near Ashby's Gap, George Washington made his headquarters at Yew Hill during March, 1769. Yew Hill stands to this date, and is now owned by descendcents of Robert Ashby.
