PHILIPPI -- Sylvia K. Thorne, age 60, a resident of Volga, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Broaddus Hospital Emergency Room Saturday, November 2, 2002. She was born May 18, 1942, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Opha and Geneva (McCauley) Zirkle. She was united in marriage to Ronald Thorne, who preceded her in death June 9, 1997.
Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and husband David Brewer, Fairmont, Renee and husband Brian Curtis, Buckhannon; 2 sons and 1 daughter-in-law, Richard and wife Stephanie Thorne, Brandywine, W.Va., Rodney "Albert" Thorne and companion Linda Westbrook, Volga; companion, John Saffle, Volga;
4 sisters, Vivian Arbogast, Buckhannon, Carol Criss, Philippi, Betty Elwood, Lorain, Ohio, Opal Skidmore, Norton;
4 brothers, Ivan Zirkle, Avon, Ohio, Howard Wayne Zirkle, Elyria, Ohio, Donald L. Zirkle, Vermillion, Ohio, Burl Roger Zirkle, Buckhannon; and 9 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 1 son, Timothy, 1 grandchild and 1 brother.
In her earlier years she was a coal miner, having been employed at Kitt Energy and Upshur Coal. She was presently co-operator of J&S Grocery Store at Century. She was a member of United Mine Workers, District 31. She was a United Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut Street, Philippi, from 4-8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Carol Duffield officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
