Roger Lee Zirkle, 64, husband of Linda Sharon (Hall) Zirkle of 199 Jericho Road passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at his residence.
Mr. Zirkle was born August 19, 1947 in Belington, WVA, a son of the late Vincent B. and Lillian (Delauder) Zirkle.
Roger was a graduate Phillip Barbour High School and Shepperd College in Martinsburg, WVA, where he played football and was active in many school sports. He was a member of the Fishersville Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was a moderator at the church business meetings. Mr. Zirkle worked for Morton Frozen Foods for ten years and later took an early retirement from Hershey Chocolate as a purchasing manager with twenty years of service. Roger had many hobbies including golfing, fishing, bowling, photography, bicycling and was an avid bow hunter. Roger was a member of the Augusta Archers for forty years and recently was awarded a life-time membership. He enjoyed coaching for the Augusta County football and baseball little league programs and had the honor of being inducted into the Multiple Sclerosis Hall-of-Fame after raising over $50,000 bicycling for the cause.
Mr. Zirkle was a proud member of the Augusta County School Board where he served for eight years. Although he was elected to represent the citizens of the Beverley Manor District, Roger was committed to every student in Augusta County. His desire was to advocate for children through his service on the Board. During his tenure, Roger collaborated with his School Board colleagues and the Board of Supervisors to renovate Wilson Memorial High School, Stuarts Draft High School, and Wilson Elementary School. He was also on the Board during the construction of Wilson Middle School. Roger had a vested interest in career and technical education and shared his expertise as a member of the Valley Technical Center’s Board of Trustees. Throughout his time on the Board, Roger used a common sense approach in his decisions always keeping the best interest of children at heart. Roger thoroughly enjoyed visiting schools and spending time with students and staff. He was an active participant in the Virginia School Boards Association. Through his service on the Board, Roger had a profound impact in the community.
Roger loved spending time with his family and friends and was respected by many.

Surviving in addition to his wife of thirty-four years are two sons,
Kevin L. Zirkle and his wife Anne of Mooresville, NC,
Rodney L. Zirkle and his wife Sarah of Ottumwa, IA;
a brother, Melvin Zirkle of Belington, WVA; five grandchildren, Ryan Zirkle, Katelyn Zirkle, Olivia Zirkle, Bekah Linn Zirkle and Zachary Crissman; daughter-in-law, Sheri Crissman and her husband Irv of Stuarts Draft; sister-in-law, Janice Shifflett and her husband Billy of Earlysville; a niece, Heather Zirkle; nephews, Vincent Zirkle and Kevin Shifflett and his wife Tina of Covesville, also survive.
A Memorial Service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. today Friday, November 4, 2011 in the Fishersville Baptist Church by Pastors Steve Parker and John Hamric.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations in the form of canned foods, be made to the “Project Joy” program at Stuarts Draft Elementary School. Donations may be brought to the Memorial Service or dropped off at Fishersville Baptist Church anytime or donations to the American Cancer Society, 42 Neff Avenue, Suite 210, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bill Forbes, Dr. William Gorsh, Dr. Robert McMahon and Dr. William Freedman for all their kindness and care throughout Roger’s illness and a special thank you to the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah for being there for us. “Roger is gone from our sight but will always be in our hearts.”
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
