Franklin resident Forrest Roy Sumpter Jr., died Saturday (Sept.25, 2010) at the HST Memorial Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia. He was 86.

Born July 21, 1924, in Glasgow, he was the son of Forrest R. and Bessie E. Horton Sumpter Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Central Europe and received four Bronze Stars. Forrest worked for Kansas City Power & Light Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1982.

He is survived by two sons, Gary (Carolyn) Sumpter of Franklin and Clifford (Angie) Milnes of Clark; two sisters, Vivian Howard of Davenport, Iowa and Lillian (Virgil) Holt of Franklin; one brother, Gerald Lee Sumpter of Cody, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Daryl, and one sister, Virginia Jackson.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Fayette with the Rev. James Crooks officiating. Visitation was one hour before the service. Burial with military honors followed in Higginsville Veteran’s Cemetery with Mike Sumpter, Sam Taber, Matt Loesing, Tom Milnes, Scott Purvis and Marvin Campos serving as pallbearers.
