Wayne E. Stickles, 'Stick'- age 63 and a lifelong resident of Arlington, VA. passed away suddenly from respiratory failure on the morning of 25 May 2010 at the Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) in Arlington County, VA. He had also recently battled cancer there courageously.
Mr. Stickles was the second of two sons born from the marriage of Joshua C. and Doris (Littleton) Stickles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joshua in January 1975, Doris in October 2003; his grandparents Simon M. in December 1917, and Mary Anna Lee (Pier) Stickles in November 1962. Survivors include his only sibling, a brother Larry M. Stickles and his wife Barbara (Howdershell) Stickles--both of Madison, Alabama; two nephews, Tate Stickles, Esq. of Miami, Florida--and Jason D. Stickles and his wife Simone H. Stickles of Sydney, Australia. In addition, he was the great uncle to two grandchildren, also of Sydney, Australia.
Mr. Stickles retired from the U.S. Post Office as a Carrier after "humping the mail" in all kinds of weather for almost 28 years. During his service with the Post Office he received any number of letters written from folks on his route attesting to his 'pleasant personality, attention to detail, trust worthiness, and punctuality.' Additionally, he was recognized offiically several times by various postal officials for "going beyond the call of duty" while attending to his official duties as a letter carrier. Stick was also able to complete still another career and retire from First Virginia Bank in March 2006 (now known as BB&T) after working there for over 12+ years.
Stick was a USAF veteran (Feb 1966 - Nov 1969), honorably discharged after serving his county as an Admin. Specialist. Returning to Arlington after being discharged, he soon bought his first and only home and lived there comfortably as a 'confirmed bachelor' for the remaining years of his life. In addition, he was a member in good standing of the American Legion Post #139, Arlington, Virginia for 41+ years; the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5383, Mifflinton, Pennsylvania for 28+ years.
Stick was an acknowledged movie, TV, and local-area "Trivia-question King;" he also had a love of crossword puzzles, a good joke or two, ice cold adult beverages, and couldn't resist listening to anyone's 'tall-tales' or yarns about yesteryear--and always followed his Washington REDSKINS closely each year. He also was never one to mince words, and never had much use for Democrats or their 'tax and spend' policies, their 'legacy' of failed social-engineering programs, etc. He believed that any and all Democrats sole purpose in life was to increase the size of 'government'--and to attempt to make all of the working citizens, retiree's lives just "equally-miserable." Stick was also just so disappointed with what his beloved Arlington had subsequently become in 1980's and 1990's--a virtual Banana Republic.
Stick never asked for much out of life, and gave more than he ever took; he always stood ready to help anyone who asked, or that he just saw needed some help. He was a good and kind man, a loving son, a proud veteran, brother and uncle, and always a man of his word. He will be deeply missed by all his remaining family and friends. As per his wishes, his funeral was private, and his cremains interred in the family plot at Ebenezer Church and Graveyard near the village of Bloomfield, in Loudoun County, VA.
Friends, neighbors, 'Comrades in Arms' from the Arlington American Legion Post #139 enjoyed a "Celebration of Wayne's Life" on 26 June 2010--an event hosted by his older brother Big $TICK, his wife Barbara, and their oldest son, Tate. Also, as per one of Stick's last request: "Set'm-up for everyone, let's share some old stories and have a few laughs, while tipping-up a few cold ones." If you were there that day, you'd certainly agree that is exactly what happen.
