The county coroner today identified a dirt-bike rider killed in a single-vehicle accident Friday in Acton.
David Michael Stickles, 56, of Claremont, died of blunt injuries from an accident, a spokesman with the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner said.
At about 3:30 p.m. Friday, Stickles was northbound on Escondido Canyon Road approaching Hubbard Road when his 2006 Suzuki dirt bike left the roadway at Hubbard, California Highway Patrol Officer John Lutz said today.
"As he approached Hubbard, the driver allowed the motorcycle to leave the roadway," Lutz said. "He went onto the soft dirt shoulder and was unable to maintain control of the motorcycle."
The vehicle ended up in the ditch.
Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department tended to Stickles, but the driver died as a result of his injuries, Lutz said.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash.
Obituary
Age 46, of Claremont died on July 22, 2011 of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.
David was born on November 27, 1964 at Pomona Valley Hospital, and lived in the San Gabriel/Pomona Valley for most of his life. David attended Chino and Claremont schools and graduated from Claremont High School in 1982. David received a BA in Accounting from Cal Poly Pomona, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
David is survived by his mother, Jacqueline Elrod Stickels of Claremont; son, Matthew Stickels; and former wife, Josiane Stickels of La Crescenta; sister, Carol Stickels Bradford and her husband, Chris Bradford of Los Angeles; aunts, Docia Elrod Everett, Carla Sue Rawski and Mary Julich; and 10 cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Dr. James Stickels. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on August 2, 2011, at Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario. Draper's Mortuary in Ontario is handling the arrangements.
