Obituary
William A. "Bill" Rafferty was born on February 1, 1926 at the family home on Drew Ave, Highland Falls NY. He went to Heaven on July 11, 2013. Bill was the fifth of seven children born to Luke F. and Mary Shelley Rafferty. He grew up in the North End of Highland Falls, surrounded by relatives. He graduated from Sacred Heart School and Highland Falls High School and was a Veteran of the US Navy serving in the Pacific theater during World War.
II. After returning from his Navy duties, he worked for the US Post Office in Highland Falls, NY a career that spanned over 30 years as a Letter Carrier, Clerk, Assistant Postmaster, and Postmaster. He loved the town that he was raised in and was devoted to its residents. One very special stop on his mail route was the Maher household on West Street, where he met Margaret "Peggy" Maher; they were married on April 20, 1952 and raised eight children on the top of Brown's Hill. The Rafferty Yard was for many years a gathering place for the North End children to play ball, organize games and feel the warmth of the Rafferty family. Bill also worked a second job for many years at Bear Mountain State Park. After retiring from the Post Office he was a Section 8 inspector in the Town of Highlands - which allowed him to continue to serve the community he loved. Bill was very active in Sacred Heart Parish - and served in many capacities as his Faith was very strong. He was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #515 and spent many Friday nights "working BINGO". He was one of the founding fathers of the Highland Falls Little League and served as an assistant coach, coach, umpire and League President. He loved Baseball and shared that special bond with his sons. What many will remember of Bill was his sharp wit and his great heart. Very little that was asked of him was denied. He was the master of ceremonies for many events over the years as he loved to tell a good joke. Nothing gave him greater joy than spending time with friends and family telling stories and sharing laughs.
He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Bill's legacy was "putting in a good day's work" and always doing the right thing. He taught us all by his great example. He loved God, his family, his friends and the town he grew up in. He was born with a servant's heart and touched so many over the years. In 1992, Peggy and Bill retired to Bradenton, FL where they lived each day to the fullest with great faith, great friends and great times.
