Verlin Nitz - Obituary

Verlin Nitz, 77, of Malvern passed away Friday, July 16, 2010, in Aultman Hospital.

Born June 22, 1933, in Buckhannon, WV, he was a son of Fred and Hazel (Zirakle) Nitz.

He was a heavy equipment operator for Conrail for 29 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Malvern First Christian Church. He loved spending time with his 20 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren and enjoyed being a caregiver to many.

He is survived by his wife and loving best friend of 18 years Mary (Long) Nitz; three daughters, Sondra Bailey of Minerva, Sherry (David) Small Sr. and Linda (Ivan) Lanham of Carrollton; two sons, Steve Nitz of Dalton (special friend Debbie Papic of Alliance), and Verlin (Lorreta) Nitz of Minerva; three stepsons, John Howard of Buckhannon, WV, Roger (Jean) Howard of Hampton, WV, and Barbara Baum of Alliance; a sister, Alberta Marteney of Buckhannon, WV; a brother, Cecil Nitz of Minerva; 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and seven great great grandchildren; his special friend Joe Kapp and his favorite dogs, Skip and Precious.

He is preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years Virgie Nitz; a son, Cedric "Teddy" Nitz; stepsons Danny and Earl Howard; brothers Richard, Leon, and Charles Nitz and sisters Lorraine Oliver, Veta Warner, and Tessie Underwood.

Funeral services were held July 21 in Malvern First Christian Church with Mr. George Keralis and Mr. Dale Roberts officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery. Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva was in charge of arrangements.
