CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Margaret Bloom Lyter, 87, of Charles Town, died Friday, March 20, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Aug. 14, 1910, in Halltown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Laura Dunn Henretty.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Otho S. Bloom Sr., in 1969; and her second husband, John W. Lyter II, in 1986.

She earned her teaching degree at Shepherd College and taught for 44 years in Jefferson County, W.Va., and Loudoun County, Va. She taught in the Round Hill School for 35 years.

In addition to teaching, she and her first husband owned and operated the former Jefferson Hardware Store, Charles Town.

She was a member of retired teachers of Loudoun County, Va.; served as president of St. Thomas Lutheran Church Woman's Auxiliary, was a Sunday School teacher, worship leader and a member of the church choir.

She was instrumental in forming the local American Cancer Society and mental health programs. She served as president of the former Charles Town General Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer with Jefferson Memorial Hospital and Knott Nursing Home.

She was involved with Jefferson County Red Cross, March of Dimes, Potomac Highlands Association, Old Charles Town Library, Old Charles Town Museum, Old Opera House and Millbrook Orchestra.

She was a member of General Federation of Women's Clubs, Charles Town Woman's Club, serving as president for three terms and parliamentarian for 10 years. She also served as president of GFWC West Virginia Eastern District and served as chairman on GFWC West Virginia state projects.

She was instrumental in the first and second restoration of Holl's Pump and the dedication of Holl's Pump during the city's centennial in 1986.

She was the recipient of the 1988 Jefferson County Citizen of the Year award presented by The Journal.

In 1996, she was honored for her years of dedication as chairman of the annual Charles Town Christmas Parade by being named Grand Marshal of the first Charles Town Heritage Days Parade during the 1996 West Virginia Homecoming Celebration.

She is survived by one son, Otho S. Bloom of Charles Town; and two grandchildren, Margaret Louise Bloom and Jeffrey Scott Bloom.

She was preceded in death by one son, Harry S. Bloom, in 1967; one sister, Martha Taylor; and one brother, Guy Henretty.

Services will be Monday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Charles Town. The Rev. Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town.
