Extended Version
Local Radio personality, Ed Bishop, “The White Rabbit”, passed away in his sleep May 20th, 2016 at an assisted living facility in Rockledge, Florida.
Ed was born May 8, 1934, the son of Ira Edward Bishop II and Dorothy Amelia (Blackburn) Bishop in Brooklyn, New York.
He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army and was given an honorable discharge on May 26, 1956. By his account, he had a small role in history in serving at
one time as a fill-in driver for General McAuliffe during his tour in Germany. He also served as an MP guard at the famous Nuremberg Stadium in Germany during an
international assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses – a people Hitler had vowed to wipe out. He did work for a time in the “Crypto” unit while stationed in Germany, but remembered none of it. As he said “During the debriefing, I was ordered to forget all of it. So I did.”
His earliest religious influence was from Christian Science, and from that held the life-long conviction of “Mind over Matter” as a core of his determination in his efforts
to work to improve himself and support his family.
He married Joyce Jacqueline Stickle on June 29, 1957 in Winchester, Virginia. In 1975, he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and thus joined his wife in her faith.
If Ed knew anything, he definitely knew how to work, typically holding two to three jobs simultaneously over the years. During the day in his busiest years, you could find Ed behind the wheel of a big rig, driving delivery routes for Smiths Transfer (he retired in 1988 after 28 years of service), but at night and on weekends, it was a
whole different ball game. Monday night, found Ed spinning the tunes at the Back Room Lounge during the early to mid-seventies. He also was an evening feature on
WRFL 92.5 the Country Giant, Tuesday through Friday. Saturday afternoons found Ed “stomping his feet to the bluegrass beat”, from 1973 to 1979. In 1979 he moved to WFFV 99.3 in Middletown, and found his final radio home at WWOO in Berryville from 1982 to 1988.
During his working years in retirement, Ed drove fuel rigs for HN Funkhouser and was also a part-time independent lock smith.
Ed was a serious promoter of Blue Grass music, and an avid fan himself. During his broadcast tenure, he was often at fairs and festivals emceeing and introducing
the giants of Bluegrass, like The Country Gentleman, Mac Wiseman, Don Reno, and Buck Ryan.
He is survived by his widow, Joyce, and four of their five children. Diane Michelle Bishop of Leesburg, Virginia; Ira (Buddy) Edward Bishop IV of Gum Spring, Virginia;
Brian Timothy Bishop of Parsonsburg, Maryland; and Devon Alana Bishop of Winchester, Va. Also surviving is his sister, Joyce-Anne Dehaven and brothers, Bob, Greg and Bruce Bishop. He had six grandchildren: Jason Farrell of Houston, Texas; Amy Tremante of Merritt Island, Florida; Amedeo Tremante of St. Petersburg, Florida; Jessica Bishop of Parsonsburg, Maryland and Sidney and Dane Honaker of Winchester, Virginia. He was also blessed with 5 great grandchildren from his grand-daughter Amy: Sophia, Roman, Rocco, Mario, and Apollo - all of Merritt Island, Florida. Preceding him in death, other than his parents, were brother, George
Bishop, previously of Miami, Florida, a sister, Doris Martin, previously from Glendora, California, and his oldest daughter, Candace Carlton, formerly of League City, Texas.
He was a friend, father, brother and husband and celebrity that touched many people around him throughout the years.
A service will be held 3 p.m. on June 18, 2016 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 1325 Huntington Lane, Rockledge, Florida.
