Child #5 - Daisy - She was mudered in the early part of 1924. Her body was found in the Spring 1924.

Friday, 16 May 1924, Vol 38 No 4--GLASGOW GIRL MURDERED--"Murder will out" is as true today as it ever was, as is shown by the finding of the body of Daisy Ashby, 14-year-old daughter of Geo. Ashby, who disappeared on the night of February 2nd. At a point about half way up the Monticello Hill a road turns to the right leading to the old Lewis place, now occupied by Leo Wells, who passed over the road at 5:30 this morning on his way to the bottom, and detecting an unusual odor from what he supposed was a dead hog, stopped to investigate, as he had been noticing the odor for two or three weeks. Approaching a pile of brush at one side of the road, he saw a foot sticking out, and at once drove to the home of George Ashby and notified him as he supposed it was the missing girl. With Mr. Ashby he returned to the place and the brush was pulled away disclosing the body, which was at once recognized by means of the clothing. The body seemed to be nude, the shoes, stockings, hat, cloak and dress seeming to have been thrown over the body after it had been thrust into the brush pile.

The location being just across the line in Chariton county, Dr. Harry Tatum, coroner, was notified, and in company with L. E. Merrill, drove down from Brunswick to hold an inquest. The jury was composed of Messrs. Geo. Westhoff, W. D. O'Rear, George Brand, Vince Haskamp, Robert Himmelberg and Alex Crowley, who with the coroner, viewed the body after removing the brush. Mrs. John Maddox was called and identified the body by the clothing as that of Daisy Ashby. Coroner Tatum decided that he would halt the inquiry at this point until the Prosecuting Attorney could be notified and appear. As we go to press we learn that the inquest has been postponed until tomorrow.

The history of the case briefly, is that Daisy had been in town on the afternoon of her disappearance, and had stayed to go to a picture show. She was seen talking with two young men from Saline county. Late that night she borrowed a lantern and presumably started home by herself. The supposition is that she was followed, assaulted at this lonely spot and either killed to hide the crime or because she resisted. Feeling in this community is bitter over this brutal outrage, and if evidence can be had showing the guilt of suspected parties, it will more than likely provoke mob violence--Glasgow Missourian.

Friday, 6 June 1924, Vol 38 No 7--GEORGE ASHBY ARRESTED--

Father of Daisy Ashby Charged With the Murder of His Daughter. In Jail at Keytesville.--George Ashby, father of Daisy Ashby, the 14-year-old girl, of near Glasgow, who disappeared on February 2nd, and whose body was found in a brush pile between Glasgow and her home, was arrested Saturday by the Sheriff of Chariton County on a warrant charging him with first degree murder, and is now held in the Chariton County on a warrant charging him with first degree murder, and is now held in the Chariton county jail at Keytesville to await a preliminary hearing. He is held and we understand will not be allowed to give bond until the preliminary trial. A number of detectives have been in Glasgow for some time working on the case, and it is said one of them took up board at the Ashby home, and it is thought possibly he may have obtained a confession from Ashby in some way.

While no one had any definite knowledge as to who committed the terrible crime, many damaging statements have been made indicating that the father was suspicioned of knowing more about the crime than he would tell. The only theory is that the father was so enraged at his daughter remaining out late that night, that he may have struck her with no thought of killing her, but seeing what he had done, then sought to hide the crime by hiding the body in the brush pile.--Armstrong Herald.
